Dog Leashes
Almost every dog owner will have to deal with it at some point, choosing a dog leash for his or her four-legged friend. It may seem like a simple decision, but you may be surprised at the number of options available and why it may not be so easy to find the right dog leash.
Why a dog leash?
A leash is necessary to safely leash your dog and protect others. Leashes come in different sizes, lengths, materials and even designer styles. There is a dog leash suitable for a puppy, small dog, large dogs or adult dogs. Will you choose long or short dog leash, adjustable dog leash, leather dog leash, police leash or hunting leash? We've listed the differences for you so you can find the most suitable leash to suit your furry friend.
Long versus short dog leashes: what's the difference?
There are several factors to consider when choosing the perfect leash. Such as your lifestyle, the size of your four-legged friend, whether your dog pulls and the environment in which you go for walks with your furry friend. If you enjoy biking with your dog, a long leash is best. But if you walk through crowded areas such as the city or parks, a short leash is the safer option.
To help you make an informed choice, we've listed the pros and cons of various dog leashes.
Short dog leash
A short dog leash is a leash from 1 meter to a maximum of 1.80 meters and is ideal for walking pets in crowded areas.
- Allows you to keep your distance from other dogs.
- Prevents your furry friend from getting tangled in poles and lampposts.
- Keeps your pet from wandering around before he is properly trained to follow.
- Gives your pet a little room to explore without leaving too much slack that will wrap around your or your pet's legs.
- Can feel restrictive to your pet, causing him to pull.
Long dog leash
Longer dog leashes are 2 to 3 feet or more and are ideal for training purposes.
- Longer dog leashes allow you to maintain control over your pet while giving him a sense of freedom.
- It gives you the opportunity to teach your dog or puppy to respond to commands when he is further away from you.
- Your pet should be well trained in controlled situations before you let him walk on a long leash.
- Requires constant attention to prevent dragging and tangles.
Now that you have determined the right length of dog leash for your faithful four-legged friend, there are also many different types of dog leashes. Short and long there are all kinds of options. The different leashes at a glance:
Standard dog leashes
The most well-known dog leash is probably the dog leash with handle and musketon to attach the leash to the collar. The standard dog leash is available in different lengths although you will find that it is often a short leash up to a maximum of 2 meters. At Cooper & Quint you will find a wide range of dog leashes made of vegetable tanned leather, dog leashes made of soft material such as cotton rope and hemp, all in different colors and designs.
There are also longer dog leashes of 3, 5 or 10 meters. By this we do not mean the flexi or roller leash. A long leash is a one-piece leash where the owner lets the leash out and rolls it back up when needed. If you are looking for a long leash, feel free to contact us.
What is a police line or adjustable dog leash?
An intermediate solution to a short leash and a long leash is the police line or police leash, also known as the adjustable dog leash. A police leash is a dog lead that you can adjust at several points. Often the leash has three eyes and two musketon hooks so you can easily attach the leash to the collar. The different eyes allow you to make the leash shorter or longer.
- Easy to adjust to different lengths and even hands-free
- Easy to attach to the dog collar
- Can also be used with multiple dogs together
Are you looking for an adjustable dog leash? There are a large selection of adjustable dog leashes available within Cooper & Quint's assortment.
What is a flexi leash or roller leash?
A flexi leash or roller leash is a dog leash on a pulley that is often tucked into a box with a handle. You can lock the leash or let your dog run free. The leash then gets longer the further the dog is away from you and shorter once the dog gets closer again.
- The lines are often longer (can be up to 10 meters long!), allowing the dog to experience a lot of freedom. Especially useful if you have to leash your dog in certain areas and still want to give your dog the feeling of freedom. It can also come in handy if you want to train your dog to run off-leash. That way you can see a bit of what he is doing without him going his own way right away.
- The advantage of the length is also the disadvantage. Often it is a thin wire that can easily get tangled in bushes and branches. You also have less control when your dog is further away. Therefore, you cannot easily correct unexpected situations, such as traffic.
- If your pet sees another friend he wants to play with, you can easily become entangled in the rope. If this happens around legs it can cause burns or cuts.
At Cooper & Quint, you won't find flexi or leashes. The philosophy is to make as many durable products as possible, where these lines do not fit.
What is a hunting line, slip line or retriever line for dogs?
For all of these dog leashes, they are a collar and leash in one. At the end of the leash is a loop that you can easily slide around the dog's head. Ideal if your dog runs loose a lot and you want to quickly give him the freedom to explore nature.
The difference between the different lines is in the use of a stopper at the loop.
Hunting line or retriever line
With the hunting line or retriever line, there is a stop placed at the neck. The loop is adjustable by means of a metal stopper to the size of the dog's neck, preventing choking. Many are equipped with an extra stop, which ensures that the loop does not stand out completely, this to prevent your dog from just escaping.
- Easy to put on the dog
- Ideal if you run your dog loose a lot or for hunting dogs.
- No chance of suffocation or strangulation thanks to the stopper.
- Not ideal to train your dog with due to risk of injury at the neck.
Skid line
With the slip line, also called anti-tug line or training line, the stop is the other way around. The loop cannot get bigger, but it can get smaller. The loop can slip shut when pressure is put on the leash. Once the pressure is off the leash, then space at the neck is also restored.
- Easy to do with the dog
- The pressure on the dog's neck allows you to correct
- Chance of strangulation and chance of injury at the neck.
At Cooper & Quint you will find the Cotton Ocean hunting line as part of the assortment. Especially for anyone who likes to go out with his dog, but does not use the leash for training purposes.
What is a training leash for the dog?
This is where opinions are sharply divided. Some call a police leash a training leash, while others classify the hunting leash or slip line as a training leash. In itself it doesn't really matter, in fact all lines are training lines for your dog if you are going to train your dog with them. Agree with your trainer which dog leash is best for training your pet.
