Maintenance of materials
To enjoy your Cooper & Quint products for as long as possible, good maintenance is essential.
Each material requires its own care. Below you can read how to best care for our materials, vegetable-tanned leather, cotton rope, and hemp cord.
Cotton Rope
A cotton rope line is not only stylish, but also easy to keep clean.
Simply wash the leash in a bowl of lukewarm water and mild detergent. Let it soak for about 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Let the leash air dry. Avoid the dryer or heater to prevent wear and tear.
Hemp Cord
Hemp products, such as collars or leashes, are also easy to clean.
Wash them the same way you would cotton rope: in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Soak for fifteen minutes, rinse well, and let them air dry. Hemp is naturally antibacterial and will only soften over time.
Vegetable Tanned Leather
Do you own a beautiful leather collar, harness, or leash from Cooper & Quint? Then you naturally want to keep it in top condition. Our leather goods are made from vegetable-tanned leather, a natural and sustainable material that requires different care than standard chrome-tanned leather. Therefore, do not use regular cleaning or maintenance products from a shoemaker; they can damage the leather.
We give you three simple tips for caring for vegetable-tanned leather:
-
1. Cleaning
Did your dog roll around in the mud and want your leather collar, harness, or leash clean and fresh again? First, remove any coarse dirt with a dry cloth. Then, slightly dampen a soft cloth (not wet!) and gently rub the leather to clean it.
Always test on an inconspicuous area of leather first. Then let the item air dry, away from heat sources such as hairdryers or heaters, as these can dry out and harden the leather. -
2. Feeding
Over time, leather can dry out, especially if exposed to sunlight, rain, or water. Cleaning also contributes to this. Therefore, give the leather some nourishment occasionally, for example, a neutral leather grease or oil. For severely dried-out leather, you can use a special cream, such as Collonil Organic Cream for vegetable-tanned leather.
Please note: the leather may darken slightly after application. This is normal. -
3. Storage
If you're not using the collar, leash, or harness temporarily, store it in a dry place away from temperature fluctuations. Wrap the item in a breathable fabric like cotton or linen—never plastic—to prevent mold.
It is also a good idea to air the leather occasionally and feed it lightly during storage to prevent it from drying out.
