Dog collar

The importance of a collar for your dog

A collar for your dog is an essential part of every dog owner's equipment. Not only is it a means of guiding your dog on walks, but it also plays a big role in your dog's safety and behaviour. A good dog collar helps you maintain control. It also offers the possibility of attaching a GPS tracker, so you always know where your dog is.

Besides safety, a collar also helps to show your dog's identity. There are many different products available when it comes to dog collars. At Cooper & Quint, each collar is carefully handmade. Harnesses, leashes with or without handle are also available to complete your outfit for a walk.

Different materials for a dog collar

Choosing the right dog collar material is at least as important as the design or colour. Different materials offer different benefits and are suitable for different situations. Below is an overview of the most common materials for a dog collar.

Leather collar

A leather collar is a popular choice for dog owners looking for a durable and stylish option. Leather is known for its longevity, especially when properly maintained. In addition, a leather collar looks classic and timeless, and as the leather ages, it takes on a unique look. Collars made from vegetable-tanned leather, such as those made by Cooper & Quint, are extra durable and eco-friendly.

A leather collar is also comfortable for the dog, as it becomes supple as it is used more often. An added advantage is that leather collars are often wide enough to attach extra accessories, such as a GPS tracker.

Cooper & Quint's leather collars are available in a variety of colours, including brown, cognac, green, grey and black.

All of Cooper & Quint's leather collars feature a buckle closure and a strong ring, making them extra sturdy. There are also matching belts to complete the set.

Hemp collar as an alternative to nylon collar

Besides leather, hemp is a natural and sustainable alternative to the traditional nylon collar. Whereas nylon is synthetic and often not biodegradable, hemp offers an eco-friendly option. Hemp is naturally strong, breathable and odour-resistant, making it ideal for dogs that like to romp in mud or swim in ponds.

The hemp dog collars at Cooper & Quint are not only practical but also stylish. They are available in chestnut brown, forest green and shell white, and have a handy snap closure for quick and easy use. For dog owners who value durability, a hemp collar is an excellent choice.

Different types of collars for your dog

There are different types of collars available, each with its own benefits and specific uses. Choosing the right collar for your dog depends on factors such as your dog's size, behaviour and needs.

Collar with click closure

A click-clasp collar is one of the most popular and convenient collars to use. The snap closure is easy to open and close, which is ideal for dogs that don't like to wait long before going outside. This type of collar is especially suitable for puppies or dogs that don't pull much on the leash. At Cooper & Quint, we use German-made aluminium snap closures for all our Simply Hemp collars. Super strong and extra secure, this way you can be sure the collar will stay securely in place during walks.

Collar with buckle

The collar with buckle offers a firmer closure than the click closure. This type of collar is ideal for larger or stronger dogs, who need extra strength to prevent the collar from coming off. A collar with buckle usually has several holes, so you can easily adjust the size for a perfect fit.

Halfcheck

A halfcheck , also called a half-slip, is a combination of a regular collar and a slip chain. This type is designed to be comfortable when the dog is not pulling, but tighter when the dog starts pulling on the lead. The purpose of a half-check s not to punish the dog, but to gently correct him when he shows unwanted behaviour.

Slipchain

A slip chain is a metal chain that tightens when the dog pulls on the leash. This type is often used in training and correction as it teaches the dog not to pull. However, it is important to use a slip chain correctly to avoid injury. The chain should hang loosely around the dog's neck when it is not pulling, and only tighten when undesirable behaviour occurs.

Prick chain

A prick chain is similar to the slip chain, but contains small, blunt points on the inside that press against the dog's neck when he pulls on the leash. This type is designed to correct persistent pullers. The use of a prong chain is controversial and usually not recommended by animal behaviourists, as it can be painful for the dog. It is important to always exercise caution when using this type of collar and seek the advice of a professional.

Gentle Leader

The Gentle Leader is more like a leash as this type which is not around the dog's neck, but around its snout and behind its ears. This type is designed to reduce unwanted dog behaviour by having control over the head rather than the neck. When the dog pulls, its head automatically turns to the side, giving a natural correction without causing pain.

How do you measure your dog for a properly fitting collar?

Finding the right size is crucial for your dog's comfort and safety. A collar that is too tight can cause discomfort or even injury, while one that is too loose can easily slip off. Follow these steps to measure your dog's size:

1. Measure your dog's neck

Use a tape measure to measure the circumference of your dog's neck at its widest point, just below the jaw. Make sure the measuring tape is not too tight, but close enough to determine a good size.

2. Two fingers rule

When adjusting the collar, make sure you can always put two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck. This ensures that the collar is comfortable but not too tight.

3. Check the fit regularly

Dogs may change in weight or their fur may thicken, especially in winter. It is important to check the fit of the collar regularly and adjust it if necessary.
